Luana was born and raised in Hawaii, where she lived a simple and creative life, always close to nature. When moving to the Bay Area to pursue a degree in art, she quickly saw the dramatic contrast of life in a densely populated city, compared to the lush, unhurried pace of tropical Hawaii. Now realizing her strong affiliation with nature and organic growth patterns, she finds even the smallest flower or blade of grass more precious than ever. She expresses her deep and abiding love of nature’s tiniest wonders through her work as a jeweler to amplify the beauty of simple natural objects and bring attention to our emotions. Desiring a return to the comforts a natural surrounding, Luana is currently in transition to the countryside of West Cork, Ireland. When not in Europe, she can be found in the Bay Area, in her home state of Hawaii, or traveling abroad. She currently holds a BFA in Jewelry/Metal Arts from California College of the Arts and enjoys teaching, maintaining her small jewelery business and creating one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Her work can be found throughout the United States.

Artist Statement

Modern jewelry has evolved significantly from its origins. Traditionally, we wore jewelry for many reasons- to show one's status, age or origins; to feel comfort, protection or strength; to remind us of a place, person, or memory. In modern day, I wonder what our motivations are to adorn ourselves. The intentions of many are to display wealth, or to enhance appearance. I question what it is we find sentimental and precious; amongst all the glamor and monetary distractions, can we distinguish what we hold close to our heart?

I yearn for us to return to sentiment, with jewelry as its expression. It is my desire that we continue the practice of wearing jewelry to feel protected, no matter how spiritual or practical; or to show our love for and dedication to a person, or the loss thereof. Instead of a piece of jewelry representing money in the weight of gold or karat of diamond, it should be a reminder of our emotions. When worn, these treasures remind us of the things that make our heart grow warm, skip a beat, or let us wander into dreams.
